As a key component of the knowledge mobilization plan, ACW’s Green Education and Training working group seeks to develop and deliver training and education programs for workers – both in the workplace and in special courses and sessions outside of the workplace.
For meaningful knowledge mobilization into the workplace, it is essential to integrate climate change awareness and strategies to reduce GHG into the activities of workers and their unions at all levels. Unions in Canada do a significant amount of education for leaders and activists in their organizations and it will be important to integrate climate change to expand current concerns and also to create new programs that unions see as assisting them in involving younger members and developing a new group of activists interested in these issues.
Methods for developing curricula and materials for use by unions will include workshops (conference) that brings together experts on climate change and union leaders to examine specific entry points in union activity where information and activities could be shared.
Raising awareness and institutionalizing best practices is a factor that needs to be on the collective bargaining agenda. Climate change is a topic well suited to interest-based bargaining, and lends itself to more contemporary bargaining strategies that focus on common interests and developing a long term relationship. Additionally, climate change will be an important topic in the union occupational health and safety agenda. Again, as many Canadian jurisdictions have mandatory Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC) in all large workplaces (regardless of whether a union is present or not), educational materials and curricula to assist (JHSC) in incorporating climate change strategies and concerns into their activities would be readily welcomed.
